Who We Are and Why

Description

We are a group of four female undergraduate college students who had the privilege of visiting a museum in Manhattan dedicated to gangsters. This museum, The Museum of the American Gangster, sounded to us like it would have an extensive background on all kinds of gangsters. With this in mind, we expected to see a information on a plethora of gangsters, both obscure as well as more well-known. Upon arrival, we were underwhelmed. In a small two room space, we still had hope that we would learn about all kinds of gangsters. We learned a lot about gangsters who were common household names; the gangsters that we learned about in high school. Certain names of more obscure gangsters were mentioned, but only briefly. With this, we all realized that there could be so much added to this museum. The "American Gangster" is not just Al Capone. It's not just Bonnie and Clyde. It's more than just a White man. We took our strong feelings about the underrepresentation of women and people of color and decided that we could do our own research and create our own archive of gangsters, but this time, the archive would be dedicated to the Forgotten Gangsters.

We were not experts on the subject of organized crime when we started this project, nor are we experts now. However, we are much more educated on the topic now than we were when we started. We invite you to explore our archive and to also challenge your surroundings. Research what you are interested in and what you want to know more about or see more of.

Lesson Plan Text

We hope to educate our viewers about the underrepresented side of America's past. It's no secret that we had gangsters, we just hope to show you how much of the organized crime world we're inherently taught to ignore.
